Equity Bank Uganda was formed in 2008 when Kenya's Equity Group Holdings acquired Uganda Microfinance Limited for about US$27 million, receiving a full Tier I commercial banking license from the Bank of Uganda that December and relaunching as Equity Bank on 30 March 2009. It grew rapidly, rising from Uganda's 15th-largest bank by deposits in 2011 to 6th-largest by 2021.
