Stanbic Bank Uganda traces back to 1906 as the National Bank of India, later becoming Grindlays Bank before Standard Bank acquired the network in 1991 and renamed it Stanbic Bank (Uganda) Limited. In 2002 it merged with the government-owned Uganda Commercial Bank to become the country's largest bank by assets and branches, and the government listed its shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange in 2005. It remains Uganda's largest commercial bank by assets, a subsidiary of South Africa's Standard Bank Group.
